Meeting Calendar 2017

23rd February at 2.00pm: Jenny Higgins and member Frank Mitchell

Jenny and Frank will speak on the use of the National Library of Australia's Trove, in particular on Digitised Newspapers, and how to get the most from them. Not to be missed!

Jenny was until recently the family history librarian at the National Library and now works with the Australian Dictionary of Biography in Canberra.

 

23rd March at 2.00pm :  James Walters, Vivid Recollection

James has worked for the BDHS on photographs from our collection which needed specialised scanning. He is going to speak about the history of photography, conservation and repair of damaged and degraded photographs and digitisation. He does amazing work, samples of which are on his website: www.vividrecollection.com.au

 

27th April at 2.00pm:  Dr Peta Seaton. Archaeologist - 'From the Bear Pit to the Trenches - Still Digging in Ancient Jordan'

Peta has maintained a long standing interest Near Eastern archaeology and research. She runs her own strategic policy and business consultancy drawing on her background in government, as a former Member of Parliament, and in advertising and media. She is the Chair of Australian Hearing, an Associate Director of the BDCU Alliance Bank and has been a non-executive director of the Bradman Foundation and CARE Australia. She lives in Moss Vale and continues her archaeological research on the Chalcolithic period with current fieldwork at Pella in Jordan.  

 

25th May at 2.00pm: Eric Savage, Society member and Berrima resident.

Eric will present an illustrated talk on recent research into the significance of historical landscapes and why they should be protected. His particular focus will be Sutton Forest and Berrima

 

22nd June at 12 noon:   June luncheon - Dr Carol Liston, Associate Professor in Australian History, School of Humanities and Communication Arts, Western Sydney University and President of the Royal Australian Historical Society.

Dr Liston will speak about The Governors' Ladies, a forthcoming RAHS publication on the wives of NSW Governors which she is editing with Dr Christine Wright. 

 

27th July at 2.00pm: Joy and Allan Murrin, Joy Murrin Family History Services

For more than 40 years Allan and Joy have been searching their own Family History, and in 1995 Joy was appointed as an Accredited Transcription Agent by the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Allan and Joy are exciting speakers and have spoken on Family History topics to many societies and groups. With years of experience and a vast array of knowledge, Allan & Joy continue to find Joy in their own family, and in assisting others find joy in family history.

 

24th August at 2.00pm: Tina Allen - Southern Highlands author 

Tina will speak about her recently published biography, Bill Gibson: Pioneering Bionic Ear Surgeon

 

28th September at 2.00pm: David Blair, Research Toponymist, Australian National Placenames Survey.

David will speak about his work in discovering and publishing the origins of the millions of Australian placenames.

26th October at 2.00pm: Archives Roadshow

Bring an item from your own collection and tell its story.

23rd November at 2.00pm - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

AGM will be held in the upstairs meeting room of the Archives and Research Centre, Mittagong

 

Friday 15th December 2017 - CHRISTMAS LUNCH

To be held at Highlands Golf Club at 12 for 12.30pm. Cost $28 per person for a two course lunch with all the trimmings.  Please book and pay at the Archives by Friday 8th December 2017.
