Prisoners in Arcady
Based on the book of the same name by renowned local historian John Simons, this exhibition recounts the story of German mariners interned at Berrima during World War 1. Their activities during internment are the focus of the exhibition. Locked up at night, they were allowed their freedom during the day and used a section of the river for recreational activities.
On display is a dugout canoe and other objects that illustrate the culture and traditions of these industrious internees during their enforced stay.
How the enmity between Germans and Australians was overcome in Berrima is a model of early peace-building.
This fascinating exhibition was officially opened in February 2009 by the German Consul-General, Mr Hans Gnodtke.
The exhibition was designed and curated by Lyn Hall.
